The office of former MLA late Anbil Poyyamozhi on Collector’s Office Road here reverberated with festivities when his son Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi celebrated his birthday on Wednesday.

A large number of DMK cadres, his supporters, friends, and well wishers of his late father, gave him a rousing welcome.

The cadres, who have identified themselves with the loyalists of Anbil Poyyamozhi even after his death, came in large numbers to wish Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who is perceived to be close to party treasurer M.K. Stalin and an emerging power centre in the Tiruchi DMK, which has been dominated by its district secretary and former Minister K.N. Nehru for the last two decades.

Although the unprecedented rain in Chennai had delayed his arrival, it did not dampen the spirit of festivities. Many of them hailed Mahesh Poyyamozhi as a young face of DMK. They came up with posters and banners in different parts of the city eulogising him. He is a third generation politician in his family. His grandfather Anbil P. Dharmalingam had been the DMK’s iron man still his death.

“I do not attach any significance to the birthday bash. I feel happy to see the love and warm greetings of cadres,” Mr. Mahesh told The Hindu .

He said the event was not aimed at showing his strength.

He had been offering welfare assistance to the poor and needy on his birthdays in Chennai. He had done this in Tiruchi now as per the wish of cadres.

Party insiders say the grand bash in Tiruchi, when the State elections are round the corner, has sent a message that DMK leadership is readying him for electoral politics. Mr. Mahesh’s rise in the district and State politics of DMK is inevitable, say his supporters.

Mr. Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who was perceived as one of the architects of Mr. Stalin’s recent “Namakku Name” Statewide tour programme, said he had not applied his mind yet on contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections. The party leadership had faith in him and made him a State deputy secretary of youth wing. His priority was to discharge his duties towards strengthening the party.

“I feel happy to receive him. He will fulfil the void created by my brother. I stand by Mahesh,” said a three-time MLA Anbil Periasamy, brother of Anbil Poyyamozhi.
